The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS, is a standardized English language proficiency test that measures the language ability of non-native speakers who wish to study, work or migrate to English-speaking countries. The test is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English.

The IELTS test assesses a candidate’s proficiency in four language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The test is available in two formats: Academic and General Training. The Academic format is suitable for those who wish to study at a tertiary level, while the General Training format is for those who seek work experience, training or migration to an English-speaking country.

The Listening and Speaking tests are the same for both formats, while the Reading and Writing tests differ. The test duration is 2 hours and 45 minutes. The Speaking test is conducted face-to-face with a certified examiner, while the other three tests are taken on a computer or in a paper-based format.

The IELTS test is recognized by more than 10,000 organizations worldwide, including universities, employers, professional bodies, and government agencies. The scores are valid for two years, and the test taker can take the test multiple times if necessary.

Preparing for the IELTS test involves developing language proficiency in all four skills, familiarizing oneself with the test format and practicing sample questions. Test takers can also enroll in preparation courses or seek guidance from trained IELTS coaches.
